Your child begins the journey into adolescence in a world of sexting, bullying, online stalking and moral defiance. Innocence is under attack, and you cannot win the battle with a single awkward talk or a strict set of rules.  The primary defense for your child is a strong relationship with you and with God.

We live in a heart sick culture, a very heart sick culture!  I am amazed how downhill things have gone even in the last 10 years!  Talking to your children about sex is very important!  This is a subject you do not want them to hear from the world; you want them to hear it from YOU!!  I know it can be very uncomfortable and I know it is something parents often dread more than having a tooth pulled but we have to put on our adult pants and just do it!  There is just too much at stake not to!

There are things you can do to make it easier:  Here are 5 ways to prepare your child for “the talk”.

  1. Plan a special date or weekend trip with your child
  2. Answer questions honestly, let your child know you are a safe place to talk to about the tough issues.  If you don’t know the answer, let them know you will find out.  You just never know what they will ask!
  3. Pray for your children and for your special time together.  God cares about this and knows how uncomfortable and even downright scared you may be.
  4. Buy a special gift – some buy purity rings but there are many Christians getting away from these for several reasons so don’t feel like it has to be a ring, although it can be.  It can also be a special Bible or devotional book, another piece of jewelry, or just something that signifies growing up.  It doesn’t have to be expensive but it should have a meaning behind it.
  5. Use Good Resources such as Passport2Purity for Help

FamilyLife developed Passport2Purity (P2P) to assist you in building heart-to-heart communication with your preteen while laying a foundation of purity that will prepare him or her for the turbulent years ahead.  Through the shared listening experience, object lessons and guided conversations of a P2P weekend getaway, you can set your son or daughter on a journey of moral integrity – and strengthen the bond between you.  It is designed to be used by a mother and daughter or a father and son when the child is a preteen.  It is suggested that the materials be completed over a weekend away from home, as the child may be more open to discussing the topics away from his or her normal environment.  If this isn’t possible, the material can be completed over a period of four or five weeks.

I have worked with these DVD’s with my preteen daughter lately and they are fabulous.  She is 11, so I did feel a little of it was too much for her at this time so I did watch ahead first but you know your children better than anyone.  Some will be totally ready, some will not.  Most of it was perfect timing for her and we had some great discussions that I don’t think we would have ever had if it wasn’t for the course.  The Rainey’s do a wonderful job with their talks and keep the attention of the child.  This would be excellent for boys too!  I would recommend watching them ahead of time, you may have some different thoughts on the dating stuff, and like I said before, some of the material may be too deep for a child not ready.  Every family is different and has some different ways they approach these subjects.  Saying all that, it is biblical worldview and even if there are some differences you will benefit a great deal from most of it!
